Sarbananda Sonowal, a member of Rajya Sabha was born in 1962 in a middle-class family in Dibrugarh District of Assam State. He has done his schooling at Don Bosco School in Dibrugarh. Sarbananda Sonowal completed his BA (Honors) in English Subject from Dibrugarh University and then obtained a Law degree from the same college. He was inclined toward politics from his college life. Sarbananda Sonowal served as the president of All Assam Student Union in his early years of Politics.

He joined Assam Gana Parishad in 2001 and moved into the active state politics. The first time he was nominated from the Moran assembly constituency in 2001 as the candidate of AGP. He won the election and became the MLA of the Assam Assembly. He left AGP in 2011 and joined Bharatiya Janata Party.
