Balbir’s father Chanan Singh was a farmer and his mother Chanan Kaur was a housewife. He studied at DAV College, Nakodar, and in 1981 he left his studies and wore saffron clothes. He is a Nirmala Sikh and under his leadership, an anti-river pollution campaign was run in Punjab. Seeing his contribution to the environment, the Aam Aadmi Party chose him.
