Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the president of the J&K People’s Democratic Alliance was in the Bijbbehara district of the region of the state in the family of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed in 1959. She inherited the state politics from his father. She was brought up in his hometown with her mother Gulshan Ara. After completing her schooling she joined she graduated from the government Women’s College Jammu and moved to Delhi to work as a professional. Mehbooba worked with various corporate companies in Delhi till 1989. In 1989 she moved back to Jammu & Kashmir and started helping her father in politics. Her father founded the J & K Peoples Democratic Party in the 90s of the 20th century.

Mufti’s father once again joined the Indian National Congress Party and Mehbooba officially entered state politics as the candidate of the INC party in the state assembly election in 1996. She won the election and served as the first woman leader of the opposition in the state assembly. Mehbooba Mufti contested in Lok Sabha election 1999 as the candidate of PDP from Srinagar constituency but she was defeated by Omar Abdullah, son of the incumbent Chief Minister of the state. She served as the First woman chief minister from 2016 to 2019 with the alliance between the PDP and BJP.

Mehbooba is living in Anantnag city the state with her daughters Iltija Mufti and Irtiqa Mufti. Her ex-husband is also a social activist and a member of the J & K National Conference party. Mehbooba contested in the 2004 general election of Lok Sabha from the Srinagar seat won the election and joined the parliament of India. She did not contest in the general election of 2099 but in 2014 she was elected once again as a member of parliament from the Srinagar seat. She was sworn in as the chief minister of the state after the death of her father in 2016.

Mehbooba Mufti introduced first time her daughter Iltija in the streamed politics of Jammu and Kashmir State in 2024. She did not contest in the state assembly election. Mehbooba is still active as the chief of JK PDP but somehow people know that she is going to promote her daughter in state politics. Her elder daughter Iltija started handling the political duties as the media advisor of the party. She is also handling the social media accounts of Mehbooba Mufti. Her younger daughter is still busy with her studies.
