Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, a Communist politician and member of the Upper House- Rajya Sabha of Parliament of India was born in 1951 in Kolkata. His family settled in Kolkata, Calcutta then migrated from Bangladesh after Independence. His family was living in the Kalighat region of the City and he completed his schooling government school of Kalighat. He moved to Ashutosh University for his science graduation. He was active in politics from his student life as a member of the youth wing of the Communist Party, Student Federation of India. Bikash Ranjan was arrested and went to jail for participating in protests against the government in his student life. He started his political career as a member of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Later, he contested as the candidate of CPI(M) from Jadavpur Constituency in the 2019 General Elections. He was defeated and secured the third position after the second of the Trinamool Congress Party.
