Shri Bhartruhari Mahtab is a prominent Indian Politician from Odisha. He has been serving as a Member of Parliament in Lok Sabah since 1998. In the 2024 General Election, he was elected to the 18th Lok Sabha from Cuttack constituency defeating his nearest rival BJD’s Santrupt Misra by a margin of 57077 votes. Thus winning the seat for the seventh consecutive time. Senior leader Bhartruhari Mahtab recently resigned from the BJD and contested for the Cuttack Lok Sabha seat as a BJP candidate.
He was born in 1957 in Agarpara, Bhadrak, Odisha to the prominent politician family of Dr Harekrushna Mahtab and Subhadra Mahtab. His father, Dr Harekrushna Mahtab was the leader of the Indian National Congress, a notable figure in the Indian independence movement, and also served two times as the Chief Minister of Odisha. Bhartruhari Mahtab completed his graduation in M.A. (English) from Utkal University, Odisha.

Bhartruhari Mahatab started his political career by joining the BJD party. But, he resigned from the BJD to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 28 March 2024 before the Lok Sabha elections. Mahatab was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 from the Cuttack constituency of Odisha. He was continuously re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, 2019Â & 2024 from the same constituency. Bhartruhari received the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 2017. Mahatab was also appointed as the pro-tem speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on 20 June 2024 by President Droupadi Murmu until Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
