Indian firebrand politician, first female railway minister, and first female chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee is currently serving as the 8th Chief Minister of the 17th assembly of West Bengal state. She has indulged in Bengali politics since her early college years while pursuing a law degree in Kolkata. At that time the state was ruled by the leftist government of the Communist Party of India under the leadership of Jyoti Basu. She strongly opposed and unlike the rule of the CPI government in West Bengal state in the 1970s. So Mamata joined the Congress Party (Indira) in the 1970s. She left the Congress Party in 1997 and founded the All India Trinamool Congress Party. After founding the party she was involved in state politics. She is currently serving her third consecutive term as the Chief Minister of  West Bengal. Mamata Di defeated the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the state assembly election in 2011 and broke the 34-year-old rule of the Communists in the West Bengal state of India. After that communists never won the assembly election in the state.
